About This Place

Nestled just steps away from Marseille’s bustling Old Port, Bar Marengo offers an inviting blend of traditional charm and modern hospitality that makes it a favorite local spot for both visitors and residents alike. This classic bar captures the essence of Provençal leisure, where you can bask in the sunshine at the expansive outdoor seating area, feeling the gentle harbor breeze as you unwind with a drink in hand.

One of the standout experiences at Bar Marengo is the warm and friendly service that greets you from the moment you arrive. Guests repeatedly praise the staff’s attentiveness and helpfulness, creating an atmosphere that feels far more personal than your typical bar. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick aperitif before exploring Marseille or settling in for a relaxed evening, the environment is effortlessly welcoming — a sanctuary of calm amid the lively port area.

Bar Marengo’s menu reflects local flavors and comforting classics, perfect companions to your drinks. Sample their houmous tapas or poivrons marinés tapas, each bite bursting with Mediterranean zest and freshness. The house wine, often highlighted by patrons for its quality and fair pricing, pairs beautifully with these small plates. For a touch of indulgence, try the linguine agli scampi, which brings a delicate balance of flavors, ideal for those craving a light but satisfying culinary treat.

On the beverage front, the bar impresses with both its variety and charm. From crisp local beers recommended by staff to refreshing freshly squeezed orange juice, every sip feels thoughtfully crafted to elevate your experience. Café enthusiasts will appreciate the smooth, aromatic cafés and the comforting café noisette and hot chocolate offerings praised by repeat visitors.

It’s worth noting that, while Bar Marengo boasts a cozy indoor area perfect for escaping unexpected showers, some guests have observed that the restrooms could benefit from extra attention. However, this minor downside does little to overshadow the overall appeal and value that the bar delivers.

What truly makes Bar Marengo memorable is its ability to serve as a reliable, affordable retreat near key city landmarks — a place where you can soak in Marseille’s lively spirit or simply pause and savor a quiet moment. With its reasonable prices, prime location, and genuine hospitality, Bar Marengo is a must-visit for anyone looking to drink in the authentic flavor of Marseille’s port life.

Nice traditional bar close to the old port with a number of sits outside where you can enjoy your drink under the sun. When it started to rain, we moved inside and, even if quite small, it was pleasant and nice too. We tried the house wine and it was good and correctly priced. We went back a few times during our staying in Marseille.

Lovely relaxing place to stop and unwind. A very large outside seating area with a lovely harbour breeze. The service was swift and friendly and they recommend a lovely local beer. We came here twice and both times were great. The prices are very reasonable. We highly recommend and will return next time we are in Marseille.

After dinner in Marseilles, we went to the bar with our family of nine. The weather was great, and we were able to sit outside. The staff was very friendly and helpful! We drank beer, wine, and cocktails. Unfortunately, the restrooms weren't clean. The bar prices are very reasonable compared to other bars! We had a great time there!

Cheap , very close to the old port and the bus station to go to Notre Dame de la Garde. We had the typical anice flavoured apetitif drink for 2€.

We have been before 8 for a refresher before starting our trip back. Fresh orange juice is one of the greatest I have had! Café Noisette and a hot chocolate are delicious as well! Step by for a little refresher!

If you are looking for a bar that still has the ambiance of an old city local, where real locals drink alongside the tourists then look no further. I have been visiting from time to time for 20 years, and it thankfully hasn't changed its character, love it! Super friendly assured service, great value cocktails and the 3 Minotte local Craft Beers @ 4.50 euro a bottle.
